Chapter 12

The sharp blue of the sky made a gorgeous backdrop for the pinks and whites of the weeping cherry tree in full bloom at the far edge of the front yard. The Rocky Mountains rose up in the distance providing one of the most picturesque views in the entire United States. At least that’s how our family saw it.

All of this, and swinging on our white wooden porch swing, had done nothing to improve my mood. My normal urge would’ve been to go find a couple of brothers and join in with whatever they were doing. But I didn’t feel like I’d be welcome today. After a few more minutes of swinging, I decided, welcome or not, I needed to break the ice at some point, so I headed over to the stable.

The office was empty, as were all the stalls. I could hear cabinet doors opening and closing, so I followed the sounds to the small equipment room behind the breeding area. Ty had his back to me and was leaned over the counter writing in a notebook.

I leaned next to him. “What are you doing?”

“Checking to see if we need to replace anything,” he said without looking up.

“Have you seen Jake this morning?”

“Yeah.”

“How is he?”

He looked over at me. “Hungover.”

“Oh. But he was up already?”

“He was out here this morning, but he looked like shit so I told him to go back to bed. We only have two covers today anyway, one late morning and one afternoon. We can handle it without him.”

I nodded. “Maybe I’ll talk with him later today, then.”

This time he turned his whole body to face me, leaned one elbow on the counter. “I’m telling you, Jess. Give him some time. When he’s ready, you’ll know. You’re not going to fix this by bugging him about it.”

“I wasn’t going to bug him, I was just going to…”

He raised his eyebrows. “What?”

“I guess I was going to bug him. I don’t want to wait.”

“I know you don’t. Patience has never been your thing. But this time, let him come to you, okay?”

I nodded. “Where’s everybody else?”

“Adam and Elliot are working on the fence.”

“I’ll go bug them instead.”

He smiled. “Yeah, do that.”

When I cleared the doorway of the stable, I could see them about halfway around the pasture, squatting next to the fence. I took my time walking out there, enjoying the warm weather and dreading their possible reactions. As I approached, they both turned to look up at me.

Adam’s face was neutral. “Morning.”

Nothing from Elliot. Clearly he’d been filled in on yesterday’s events.

Adam went back to looking over the end of the fence rail. “This isn’t going to work. We need to put a new bracket on.”

Elliot stood up. “Do we have more brackets?”

Adam set the hammer in the grass next to the fence post and stood. “I’m pretty sure. I think last time we ordered four or five. I just have to find them. They’re probably in the office somewhere.”

Adam walked away toward the stable and Elliot crouched down and gathered the tools into a pile.
